Traffic

For a sustainable and eco-friendly mobility

Busses, Trains, Cars and Bicycles – there are manifold possibilities and means of transportation to navigate through one's day-to-day life. A comprehensive mobility is a given natural for our modern way of life, however, at the same time certain modes of transport have drastically negative effects on our climate, environment and health.

NABU has become committed to ensure that the human need of mobility align with the urgent necessity of protecting our climate and eco systems as well as securing clean air for everyone. In order to achieve an eco-friendly and sustainable mobility we must lay the groundworks now.

Ships are a major source of air pollution in Europe: About 50.000 people die each year prematurely because of the black carbon, nitrogen oxide and sulphur emissions from the international shipping in European waters. This has to stop immediately!

NABU Cruise Ranking 2023

Cruise ships and climate protection remain incompatible

Rising greenhouse gas emissions and heavy air pollutions remain the gravest problems of the cruise ship industry. NABU's annual cruise ship ranking, presented on 28 June in Hamburg, delivers renewed evidence that change is needed. But hope is on the horizon. more →

Clean Air in Ports

EU LIFE+ Project "Clean Air“

In ports the air is often more contaminated than elsewhere. Ships, shunting locomotives, or heavy truck traffic pollute the air with emissions from fuels that are a thousand times dirtier than road fuels. more →

Emission Control Area for the Mediterranean Sea

The MedECA NGO network against air pollution from ships

Sulphur oxide (SOx), nitrogene oxide (NOx) and (ultra) fine particle (PM) emissions from shipping are a significant threat to human health, the environment and the climate. A well established network of NGOs in Europe is working towards establishing a Mediterranean Emission Control Area (MedECA) for sulphur and nitrogen oxide emissions. more →

Electromobility

More than just replacing a combustion engine with an electric drive

The transport sector is still accountable for around one quarter of European greenhouse gas emissions. This proportion has remained constant for years, despite of all the developments in the field of vehicle efficiency. more →

This stinks Logo
This stinks! - Clean up cruise ships!

There is hardly any other branch in economy where the gulf between image and reality is as wide as in the cruise industry: With huge marketing budgets and many efforts, cruise companies create a picture of being a bright, clean and environmental friendly tourism sector. more →

Study on scrubbers for ships

The study of the German environmental organisation NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union) launched in March 2015 on the use of scrubbers for ships in order to reduce the sulfur content in the ships’ fumes evaluates the technology critically. more →

LNG as Marine Fuel

Liquefied gas is meant to reduce air pollutant emissions from shipping drastically. LNG promises an immense greening potential, but there are still questions regarding the overall ecological performance. more →

Ammonia as Marine Fuel

For some time now, green ammonia has been discussed alongside green hydrogen and methanol as the green future fuel for ships. The study "Ammonia as Marine Fuel – Risks and Perspectives" investigates environmental and climate questions. more →
