Land Use

For an eco-friendly agriculture

More than half of Germany's territory is used for agricultural purposes.

This circumstance explains the vast influence agriculture has on nature and our environmental goods such as soil, water and air. The development in recent years of intensifying agriculture has led to higher stress on biodiversity and the environment due to nutrient surplus and use of pesticides. The effects are showing: a dramatic population decline of insects and birds as well as excessive levels of nitrates in groundwater and climate-damaging emissions.

NABU is committed to ensure an eco-friendly agriculture.

On these pages you will find news and information on agriculture, agricultural policy and green energy including (but not limited to) the following issues: EU agricultural reform, healthy nutrition and organic farming, pesticides and fertilisers as well as measures taken to protecting farmland birds.

Nature conservation in the hands of women

Women as role models for nature conservation in Africa

Women play a decisive role in the fight against the climate crisis. The project AfricElle helps over 20,000 women throughout six African countries to conduct nature- and climate-friendly farming operations, and strengthens their efforts on behalf of nature. more →

Good grounds for nature conservation

Project: Tax incentives for voluntary nature conservation

What are the sources of money for conservation on private land? In Germany, mainly public funding. Other models exist in the USA and South Africa. The project “Good grounds for nature conservation” asks how to implement tax relief for voluntary conservation. more →

Paludiculture meets peatland protection

Leveraging sustainable wetland management for climate action

Most peatlands in Europe are used for forestry and agriculture. They emit a lot of CO₂. By harmonising nature conservation, agricultural and economical efforts, we can turn these areas back into natural climate protectors. To achieve this, wet farming is key. more →

Results of 2009 global Policy Report

Farming in times of climate change and hunger

The agricultural sector employs the highest number of people worldwide and in many developing countries it plays a decisive economic role. After four years of research the 2009 policy report, Agriculture at a Crossroads, shows how agriculture, in times of climate change and an increase in demand for consumer goods, can be re-designed and become more environmentally sustainable and more equitable. more →

CAP 2021: "Fit, fair and sustainable"

The EU’s Common Agricultural Policy needs a drastic reform

The Common Agricultural Policy of the EU (CAP) annually distributes approximately 60 billion EUR of subsidies - most of these funds as untargeted payments per area. The CAP is inefficient and has a very bad environmental performance. A new model could help fix this – also to the benefit of many farmers. more →

Make people aware of their rights

NABU study about Green Biotechnology and nature conservation

Green biotechnology poses one of the most important problems for the future of nature conservation. Transgenic organisms have both an indirect as well as a direct influence, that much can be said, on biological diversity, which is one of the central protected commodities of nature conservation. more →
