  • A propeller for air pollution control means that on the ship a technology is used, which reduces the air pollution clearly.
  • A propeller for climate protection means that a technology is used on this ship, which significantly reduces the greenhouse gas emissions.
  • All vessels operating on heavy fuel oil or only bring their exhaust to legally permitted level by means of a scrubber are rated with four red propellers. For each measure, beyond this, individual ships receive proportionately green propellers, allowing them to be placed in the ranking ahead of its competitors.
  • *AIDAprima and AIDAperla are equipped with Soot Particle Filter and SCR-Catalytic System but regarding the company, the exhaust treatment is unfortunately not fully operational. Thus they got only a half propeller each.
  • **TUI Cruises uses scrubber also on open seas outside of Emission Control Areas were they could legally burn heavy fuel oil without exhaust aftertreatment.

Air is be-coming slightly cleaner, while climate foot-print is worsening

NABU presented its cruise ship ranking 2019. The findings of this year’s evaluation demonstrate that only a small proportion of fleets is becoming cleaner, while the industry by large continues to rely on heavy fuels and fails to employ exhaust technology. more →
