Community-based waste management in Bonga

For a clean future in Kafa, Ethiopia

Waste is a serious problem for people and nature in Ethiopia. Especially in the cities, such as Bonga in the southwest of the country, effective waste management is a real challenge. Due to population growth, inflation and a lack of political will, financial and technical ressources for proper disposal are scarce. Although there is a nationwide waste strategy, many regions do not receive sufficient support. Inadequate waste management and a lack of transfer stations lead to large accumulations of waste along roads and waterways. This exacerbates the risk of disease transmission and water contamination.

Joining hands against pollution

The aim of the project is to establish a functional, community-based waste management system in pilot communities in Bonga. The focus is not only on a comprehensive baseline study on the quantity, type and management of waste, but also on a detailed analysis of the current state of resource distribution and waste disposal administration. At the same time, a collaboration of all stakeholders will be established to adopt a management plan for the respective municipalities. In order to support practical, community-based waste management, three temporary waste transfer stations are being set up, training courses are being held and the urban population is being informed about risks and options for action via TV, radio and posters.
