The mother of all coffee trees

Declining variety of Ethiopia’s wild coffee

National Arbor Day 2019: The world’s oldest Arabica coffee tree is said to be found in the Mankira forest of the Kafa Biosphere Reserve, Ethiopia. Due to climate change wild coffee species, such as the “Mother Coffee Tree”, are facing the threat of extinction. NABU’s work in the region is preserving Kafa’s wild coffee forests and generating income opportunities for local communities alike. more →

Celebrating World Water Day with Hippos

312 hippos counted: first baseline data established for Lake Tana

Hippos are on the IUCN Red List. At World Water Day, NABU publishes first figures of this rare species for Lake Tana in Ethiopia. Together with the University of Gondar, 312 Hippos were counted in a citizen science project around Lake Tana.
