Help for the people in Ukraine
NABU supports its Ukrainian partner IERS in working with refugees in Transcarpathia
More than three million people – mostly from the east of the country – have fled their homeland since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. And their numbers are increasing every day. But not all refugees leave the country. The western region of Transcarpathia, thus far considered the safest region in the country, is already sheltering almost 100,000 refugees.
The majority are women and children who are provided with beds and hot meals and accomodated in schools, nursery schools, dormitories or sports facilities. Traumatic experiences, the loss of their familiar environment and the uncertainty of the situation have severe psychological consequences for the people, especially for the children.
A little peace: creative activities and environmental education
Our partner organisation in Ukraine, IERS (Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies), has been providing humanitarian aid for refugees within Ukraine since the first days of the war. The organisation provides contact personnel and safe spaces for temporary distraction to the families in need. Creative activities and storytelling sessions are opportunities for such distraction – not only for the children but adults alike.
In voluntary classes, local and refugee children can meet to build bird houses or bat boxes. This positive focus helps the children regain a more peaceful, hopeful state of mind. The activities can also help to bring back a sense of being in control – by crafting soap or greeting cards for those left behind in the warzones children get a chance to express their emotions.
Your donation goes directly to our partner organisation IERS, which uses it to provide environmental education activities, nature excursions and teacher training for refugee children and adults in Western Ukraine.

Bird watching excursions, trips to nature parks in the Carpathians, raft trips on the Tisza River and eco-camps for the summer months: as soon as possible again, IERS will organise nature excursions with local and refugee children.
Teacher training
IERS coordinates teacher trainings for refugees who have didactic experience in the field of environmental education or who would like to work in this field.
Where will my donation be routed?
We donate to the following Ukrainian environmental and nature conservation organisation, with which we have been working in trustful cooperation for years:
IERS - Institute of Ecological and Religious Studies
This organisation provides humanitarian aid directly in the Ukraine. Since 2016, we successfully cooperate with this Christian institution in Eastern Europe for joint conservation activities, as the Church is a great inspiration for many people in the Ukraine.
