Ranger Team and Multiplier Program
New task for the biosphere reserve
Creating new job opportunities is an essential part of the project. A training programme for 30 rangers employed by the project goes hand-in-hand with the supportive work at Kafa Biosphere Reserve.
NABU in cooperation with the Ethiopian Birdlife Partner „Ethiopian Wildlife and Natural Histors Society“ (EWNHS) and GIZ conducted the basic training for the 30 rangers, teaching them about biodiversity, the importance of forests for climate protection, ecotourism and many other topics.
The rangers have been equiped to contribute to the implementation of other project components such as forest monitoring and awareness raising programms. They patrol the core zones, oversee the implementation of reforestation and distribution of energy-saving stoves and give advice to local residents on adapting agricultural methods, forest use, and avoiding erosion. In addition they act as multipliers informing as many residents as possible about forest and environmental conservation, the concept of biosphere reserves and climate protection. Once ecotourism has picked up in Kafa they will also offer guided tours and provide visitors with information on the biosphere reserve.
